Nap Buddies
by Harry Boardman
8" x 12" ink on watercolor paper

Judge's Commentary:

"...Or "When Opposites Attract". Yin and Yang is the balance of the polar opposites. In this well done piece it is the balance between cat and dog, sharing ends of the couch foot to foot. The coat tones of light and dark, and the monochrome range of the medium also provide the viewer with that sense of balance. Nicely done." - Juliet Harrison (www.julietrharrisonphotography.com)

Me and My Shadow

Judge's Commentary:

"The concept of Yin and Yang to me is the interconnectedness of opposites. How one cannot exist without the other to form true balance. Beyond the undeniable expert handling of her medium, this artist has conveyed with humor the idea of Yin and Yang. The meek and the ferocious. The solid and the shadow. The implication of small and large. It is all there. And through the translation of light, Chihuahua becomes Bear. Meek becomes powerful. But in this instance...without Chihuahua there would be no Bear. Without meek there would be no Ferocious. This piece is masterfully done." - Juliet Harrison (www.julietrharrisonphotography.com)

"...this image was indeed one of exceptional merit for the bold and unconventional composition which was handled with authority, the masterful technique and use of colour, and for the added element of a symbolic interpretation of the theme. There is a lot to consider and think about in this painting." - Judy Wood (judywoodartphotography.blogspot.com/)

Judge's Commentary:

"This drawing has a beautifully tender feel to it, and is meticulously rendered, with a wonderful range of values extracted from the chosen medium. I was reaching to see the yin/yang theme in it when I realized the composition and use of the light and dark values give a strong suggestion of the classic yin/yang symbol. Wonderfully composed and created." - Judy Wood (judywoodartphotography.blogspot.com/)
