The Artist's Best Friend

Tami Oyler

Reamus came into my life when he was five years old. He was a smooth Chow, and like many Chows, he was a one-person dog. That person was my husband. Me, he ignored. Totally. I've never met a dog who didn't adore me on sight, so I was hurt by his aloofness. But he loved my fostered-from-birth cat, and for that I'm forever grateful. For the next six years, he watched over her with utter devotion, especially after she became ill. When she died, he went into deep mourning, and never recovered. Twelve is old for a Chow, and Reamus might have died of old age, but I think what really killed him was a broken heart.
